I was inspired to write The Ballad of Donald Trump as a reaction against the way people were generally talking about Trump in the media both on TV/radio/newspapers and on line. In fact when I looked on line the only things I could find from any musical perspective were quite dodgy comedy mash-ups. Trump is an easy target for comedy. I personally believe that is part of his strategy in getting into The White House. So far that strategy is paying off very well. People are so busy laughing at him that they don't really sit down and examine the long list of very disturbing policies that he is advocating. He is going to be nominated as the Republican Party official candidate for 2016 US Presidential election against Hillary Clinton. It is then down to the great American electorate to decide who their president is going to be. There can be absolutely no guarantee that Clinton will win. Here in Europe with our own issues to deal with we are rather powerless while watching this political soap opera across The Atlantic.
In The Ballad of Donald Trump I wanted write an actual song to try and get across how I feel about Trump and what may be the possible consequences of his election. When I put the video together it struck me that there was a direct comparison between the cartoon character of Popeye and Trump. Luckily Popeye cartoon's are now in public domain so I was able to use sections from several fantastic cartoons such as Popeye for President and Patriotic Popeye. I hope people like the song and it gets into their heads but at the same time I hope it provokes people to think about what is going on.
